PURPOSE:To facilitate and secure the collation between object patterns of recognition and recognition results by displaying the recognition results at positions corresponding to detection positions of the object patterns of recognition on the display screen of a display device according to respective position detection results of the object patterns of recognition whose recognition results are obtained. CONSTITUTION:A pattern position detection part 3 detect the presence area of each object pattern of recognition in input image data in an array of object patterns of recognition such as a character string and supplies the area detection information to a pattern segmentation part 4 while detecting the position of each object pattern of recognition in the presence area of the object pattern of recognition in the array direction at the same time. The pattern segmentation part 4 segments image data in the area among input image data stored in a row memory 2 and supplies it to a recognition part 5, which detects features of the character pattern in the segmented image data and refers to a recognition dictionary 6 to recognize the character pattern. The recognition result of the recognized object pattern is supplied to a display part 8 through a control part 7. Consequently, each recognition result is displayed adjacently in correspondence to an object pattern of recognition whose recognition result is obtained.
