PURPOSE:To obtain a plastic optical transmission body having a continuous refractive index distribution and suitable for mass production independently of the diameter or length by extracting monomers with a solvent which dissolves the monomers but does not dissolve polymers, polymerizing the monomers and evaporating the extracting solvent. CONSTITUTION:Two or more kinds of monomers A giving transparent polymers having different refractive indexes are mixed with a solvent B having no polymerizable functional group in the molecule, and the monomers are polymerized to obtain a prepolymer consisting of the resulting polymers, the remaining unreacted monomers, and the solvent B. The prepolymer is immersed in a solvent C to extract the unreacted monomers and/or the solvent B. By the extraction, a continuous concn. distribution is provided to the unreacted monomers from the center of the prepolymer toward the periphery and then the unreacted monomers are completely polymerized. Since the solvent B is added, the monomer mixture is prevented from gelling excessively in a tube and clogging the tube during prepolymn., so a plastic optical transmission body can be continuously produced in the form of a fiber. |
