PURPOSE:To obtain carbon black which selectively adsorbs acid gases, by reacting carbon black having carboxyl groups with three specified compds. in a consecutive reaction system and further with a polyethyleneimine. CONSTITUTION:Carbon black (A) having carboxyl groups is reacted with a trialkylamine (B) (e.g., triethylamine) in a solvent (e.g., tetrahydrofuran) at -50-20 deg.C for 0.2-20hr, then with an alkyl haloformate (C) (e.g., ethyl chloroformate) at -50-20 deg.C for 1-100hr, then with an alkali metal azide (D) (e.g., sodium azide) at -50-20 deg.C for 1-100hr, and further with a polyethyleneimide (D) in a solvent (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide) at 20-150 deg.C for 0.5-500hr.
