PURPOSE:To eliminate damage by more than needed polishing by constituting a device in such a manner that a magnetic recording device reads the data written in a magnetic coating region, upon mounting of a cleaning medium to the recorder, and a magnetic head under cleaning reads the data for checking the magnetic coating region periodically during polishing and cleaning. CONSTITUTION:The cleaning diskette 4 has the magnetic coating region 9 of an ordinary one-face single density, or both-face single density or both-face double density and the cleaning region 8 by rugged coating, etc. of a cleaning medium. The data of the magnetic coating region 9 is periodically read with the magnetic head 3 during polishing and cleaning of said head 3 and the read signals is fed through an amplifier 14, an analog-to-digital converter 15 and a data analyzer 16 to a main control part. The control part disconnects the head 3 from the cleaning diskette 4 and announces the completion of the clean ing to the operator by lighting up of a pilot lamp, etc. by judging that the stains of the head 3 are removed at the point of the time when CRC errors are no more generated in reading of the data during the cleaning treatment.
