PURPOSE:To enable an operator to utilize an optical character reader efficiently by automatically discriminating a writing utensil used for a medium to be read out by the reader and automatically selecting a filter in accordance with the discriminated result. CONSTITUTION:A circuit part in the optical character reader 11 is constituted of a mark reading sensor 13, a comparing part 14 and an automatic filter switching part 15. The mark reading sensor 13 is an exclusive sensor for reading out a mark 16 written in a prescribed position of the medium 3 to be read out and the mark 6 is obtained by painting out the inside of a prescribed frame with a writing utensil by a person entering characters or the like in the medium 3 to be read out. A reading signal 17 outputted from the sensor 13 is supplied to the comparing part 14. The comparing part 14 discriminates the used writing utensil on the basis of the reading signal and the compared result is supplied to the switching part 15.
