PURPOSE:To obtain carbon black which selectively adsorbs acid gases, by reacting specified carbon black with a thionyl halide, then with an alkali metal azide and further with a polyethyleneimine. CONSTITUTION:Carbon black (A) having carboxyl groups is reacted with a thionyl halide (B) in a solvent (e.g., benzene) at 50-120 deg.C for 1-150hr, then with an alkali metal azide (C) (e.g., sodium azide) in a solvent (e.g., tetrahydrofuran) at -50-20 deg.C for 1-100hr, and further with a polyethyleneimine (D) in a solvent (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide) at 20-150 deg.C for 0.5-500hr.
