PURPOSE:To enable measurement of a floating height of a head part, by constructing the head part with transparent material and using an actually available magnetic disk provided with undulations, deformations or surface projections on the substrate. CONSTITUTION:Unlike sliding surfaces 4L and 4R of a slider 4A which are mirror-finished, the internal surface of a groove 4B is not so finished that, when an illuminating beam of light I1 is directed from above the slider 4A, among the beams passing through the parts of the sliding surfaces 4L and 4R, a portion is reflected as a reflected beam I21 at the surfaces 4L and 4R and further, a beam, after passing through the part of the surfaces 4L and 4R, is reflected as a reflected beam I22 on a surface of a magnetic disk 3. THus, optical interference fringes are generated by composite reflecting beam R of reflecting beams I21 and I22. The slider 4A, relative to a comparatively higher lift of the front end receiving air flow AR, it is allowed to lift up in such posture that a clearance between the rear end bearing the magnetic head 4C and the magnetic disk 3 is narrowed down. By above said optical interference fringes, a floating height from the disk 3 of the head part 4 can be measured.
