PURPOSE:To detect arrival of a specimen by eliminating necessity of installing a special element, such as a sensor, by detecting the end part of the specimen by setting an observation area specified to an image from a TV camera and conducting the specified image processing only upon detection of said end part. CONSTITUTION:An A/D converter 2 binarizes a video signal from an image pick up apparatus 1 with the specified binarized level, and an end part detecting area generator 4 forms an image observing range of the specified image observing range inside the image pick up view field on the basis of information from an arithmetic operation unit 6. An end part detecting unit 3, relative to the binarized image processed through the A/D converter 2, sets the image observing range of the specified range in the specified position by a signal from the end part detecting area generator 4, and detects the end part of the specimen. Further, a characteristics extracting unit 5 extracts various characteristics values (co-ordinate positions, lengths, etc.) from the binarized image from the A/D converter 2 and the unit 6 conducts the specified calculations and processings by following these various characteristics values.
