PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for insect pheromone, etc., in high optical purity and readily, by alkylating (R)-(+)- citronellic acid with an alkyllithium or alkylmagnesium and reducing the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:(R)-(+)-Citronellic acid is reacted with an alkyllithium or alkylmagnesium in a solvent usually use for a coupling reaction at -40 deg.C- the boiling point of the solvent to give a (R)-2,6-dimethyl-8-oxoalkene-2-shown by formula I (* is asymmetric carbon; R is 1-18C straight-chain alkyl). Then, this substance is reduced with preferably hydrazine to give the aimed compound shown by the formula II useful as an intermediate for a physiologically active substance or a liquid crystal compound by the use of the relatively inexpensive metallic alkyl reagent by two-stage reaction operation under a mild reaction condition in high optical purity and readily.
