The invention relates to a method for identifying equides and a device for implementing it. The subject of the invention is a method of identifying equides, characterised in that it consists, for each animal, in producing and keeping, inalterably, the following identification elements: a colour photograph of the whole of the animal, from each side; a colour photograph of the animal from the front; a close-up colour photograph of the left and right views of the animal; a close-up black and white photograph of the left and right views of the animal; a sample of the animal's hair; and in sending all of the said information to the horse owner while keeping a copy at a site which is not directly accessible to the said owner.
