PURPOSE:To improve thermal efficiency of an engine when it is in transient operation, by controlling ignition timing in accordance with engine output torque calculated from the total sum of input torque to a torque converter and required torque for a speed change of a pump impeller. CONSTITUTION:An input torque calculating means 7 calculates input torque of a torque converter 1 on the basis of detected speeds in an input shaft speed detecting means 5 and an output shaft speed detecting means 6 which detect speeds of an input shaft 2 and an output shaft 3 of the torque converter 1. While a required torque calculating means 8 calculates torque, required for a speed change of a crankshaft system and a pump impeller 4A, from time differentiation of the input shaft speed and moment of inertia. Engine output torque is given by a sum of the input torque and the torque, required for the speed change, and an ignition timing control means 9 controls ignition timing in accordance with said calculated engine output torque.
