In a process for the extractive separation of hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons, from an aqueous solution, to separate the constituents exploiting their differing solubility, the solution is brought into intimate contact with an extraction medium in an extraction stage. In a subsequent treatment stage, the extraction medium loaded with the hydrocarbons is subjected to a thermal separation process in order to separate the hydrocarbons and the extraction medium from each other and the latter is returned in circulation to the extraction stage. In order to carry out the process as operationally safely and inexpensively as possible and to obtain the components separated off for reuse or disposal, the invention provides the use of a methylsilicone oil, methylphenylsilicone oil, methylhydrogensilicone oil and/or polyoxyalkylene-modified silicone oil as extraction medium. In the treatment stage, the separation only needs to be carried out as far as is required for the extraction with the recycled extraction medium. Depending on the hydrocarbons to be separated off, silicone oils of different molecular weights are used.
