In an installation for impregnating porous materials, especially carbon electrodes, cavities in the porous raw article are filled, in a container, in various process steps, using vacuum and pressure, with an impregnating agent, for example pitch with additives. The raw articles are very tightly enclosed by the containers (6) and a plurality of containers are firmly anchored to the floor and set up in one or more rows. From a supply station for vacuum, compressed gas, the impregnating agent, a coolant and, where necessary, a hot gas, supply lines (8, 9, 10, 11), which can be shut off individually on each container, lead to each container. The shut-off devices (16, 17, 18, 19) are specially constructed for optimum operation, in that the impregnating agent is employed as a seal, by varying its viscosity, in the passage gap of the shut-off device, by cooling or heating. <IMAGE>
