The invention discloses a cutter combination (2, 3) for the rough turning of shafts (7) in a shaft turning machine with a revolving cutter head. The first cutter on the inlet side is a circular cutter (2) while the second cutter has main and secondary cutting edges (36, 37). The circular cutter has a main body (12) with an upward-pointing peg (24) at the end. Inserted into the receiving angle (38) between the end (26) and the circumferential surface (25) of the peg (24) is a ring of cutting inserts (13 to 18), each of which is pivoted into position to replace the preceding cutting insert when the latter is worn out. The rotational position of the circular cutter (2) in the cutter holder is predetermined (29, 30; 41). The rotational position of the circular cutter is fixed in such a way that the joints (20, 21) between adjacent cutting inserts do not come into contact with the shaft (7). <IMAGE>
