The novel synergistic active substance combinations composed of (1) a photosynthesis-inhibitor-type substance (herbicide) and (2) a pivalamide of the general formula (II) (synergist) <IMAGE> in which R represents optionally substituted tert.-alkyl, R<1> represents hydrogen, alkyl or alkenyl, R<2> represents hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxyalkyl and optionally substituted pyridyl or optionally substituted pyridylalkyl, or R<1> and R<2> together represent an alkylene bridge having more than one member, have a particularly good herbicidal activity. A typical example of the photosynthesis-inhibitor-type active substances is metribuzin.
