Apparatus in which a field of view is scanned by an infra-red detector whose output is fed through a chain of amplifying stages to a synchronized image display device comprises means responsive to a predetermined level of the amplified signal at a first point in the chain to inject a control signal at a later point in the chain and thereby increase the luminosity of points of the displayed image which correspond to those points in the field of view which give rise to the said predetermined signal level. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, scanning of cathoderay tube display 10 is synchronized with the scanning of a field of view by infra-red detector 1 whose output is fed through calibrated A.C. amplifier 4, calibrated attenuator 6, amplification and detection stage 8 and D.C. amplifier 9 to intensity modulate the display. A calibrated unit 15 detects coincidence of the signal level at stage 8 output with a selectable reference voltage and injects a high level input voltage or a gain control voltage into amplifier 9. The persistence of phosphorescence of the display tube screen is chosen such that a continuousline image (isotherm) is displayed for those portions of the field of view giving rise to the predetermined signal level. A generator 14, synchronized with the display tube scan, may apply signals to stage 8 input to provide a grey scale appearing along a border of the displayed image. A series of photographs of the image may be taken, with unit 15 adjusted for the display of different isotherms. |
