PURPOSE:To make the modulus of elasticity in a unit cell almost even and the distribution of the fastening pressure unified, and moreover to make it possible to form a seal layer to facilitate the electrolyte holding for a wet sealing, by applying a material similar to a catalyst layer around the catalyst layer of an electrode. CONSTITUTION:In a fuel cell where a fuel electrode and an oxidizing agent electrode with a gas flow passage and a reaction catalyst layer each are furnished opposing each other on both sides of an electrolyte matrix, and a reducing reaction of a fuel gas is taken place at the fuel electrode while an oxidizing reaction is taken place by the oxidizing agent at the oxidizing agent electrode, materials with no catalyst function are attached to the four sides sealing portions of electrode at the same thickness as the catalyst layer. For example, a mixture of 30-60pts.wt. of polytetrafluoethylene, 100-350pts.wt. of water, and 0.5-1.0pts.wt. of ethanol, added and kneaded to 100pts.wt. of carbon powder, is attached in a specific amount to an electrode plate 2 adjusting the thickness with that of the catalyst layer 3, and backed up at 310 deg.C-380 deg.C to form a seal layer. Therefore, the evenness of the cell thickness is improved, the fastening pressure is unified, and a gas cross is prevented. |
