A method and a device for controlling the rotary movements of a multi-drum winch driven by a motor by means of differential gearing is characterised in that the differential gearing, which consists of double bevel gear pairs of different transmission or of double bevel gear pairs of identical transmission with following gear stages of different transmission or of double bevel gear pairs which are followed by drive gears with transmission ratios infinitely variable during operation, serves to split the drive torque into several torque components of different magnitude, as a result of which rope pulls are produced at the drums, the levels of which rope pulls are in certain ratios to one another which can be established beforehand. <IMAGE>
