PURPOSE:To perform a low level damping and to increase the number of output bits when a conversion to an analog sound signal is performed by converting the number of quantized bits in a reproducing digital sound signal which has been de-emphasized and the number of quantized bits of which has been increased to the original number of quantized bits after a low level amplification. CONSTITUTION:A pre-emphasis circuit and de-emphasis circuit 8 is inserted between an A/D converter 7a and an encoder and decoder 9 in a digital audio tape recorder. Also, an output circuit 56 is connected between the de-emphasis circuit of the circuit 8 and a D/A converter 7b. At the circuit 8, a filter having a pre-emphasis characteristic I and a de-emphasis characteristic II is used. A system controller 39 controls the encoder and decoder 9, the circuit 8, etc. And when a reproducing digital sound in which a de-emphasis has been performed and the number of quantized bits of which has been increased is converted to the analog signal converting the number of quantized bits to the original after the low level amplification, the low level damping is performed, and the number of output bits are increased.
