Hitherto, burnt lime has been added to the sludge in various quantities and, after reaction to exhaustion of the burnt lime in the sludge, the dewatering has been undertaken in a centrifuge and/or in a filter press at a pH greater than 10. This type of sludge dewatering requires on the one hand a high expenditure on flocculants or burnt lime and does not enable a sufficient elevation of the dry matter content in the dewatering in order to enable the dewatered sludge to then be landfilled. In order to be able to store the sludge dewatered in this manner, a special further secondary treatment or drying of the sludge is therefore still required which is associated with increased costs. However, according to the invention these disadvantages are avoided by carrying out the sludge dewatering in the centrifuge directly after the addition of burnt lime in the basic pH range, more precisely before the sludge has reached pH 10. <IMAGE>
