Process and device for distilling fresh water from sea water by a combined multi-stage film (VTE)-flash-(MSF)-evaporation process, in which the sea water after passing through the first VTE-process stage (Fst1) and before entering the next VTE process stage is fed to a storage point where it is subjected to flash evaporation in at least one MSF process stage (vsT1-3). The fresh water distillate and brine condensate pass jointly to all subsequent VTE process and MSF process stages. The steam (28) serving to heat up the sea water is fed through all evaporation stages consecutively. The exhaust vapor arising during the last VTE process stage is extracted, cleaned (49) of brine condensate and compressed (21), and enriched with water (52), so that a state of saturated steam is achieved. The saturated steam is fed again to the first VTE process stage at the temperature and pressure selected for the first VTE process stage. The inert gases arising during evaporation in the individual VTE process stages are conveyed away together with the fresh water distillate in the same flow direction as the residual steam, consisting of the distillate or condensate and primary steam. The extraction of the inert gases (35) is performed at the end of the condensation stage of the sea water pre-heater.
