In order to shorten the transmitted data blocks in each case comprising a test sequence and a data sequence and to improve transmission with >>frequency hopping<<, it is proposed to use a segment of a periodically repeated pseudo-noise sequence as a test signal sequence at the transmitting end and, at the output of the demodulator at the receiving end, from the predefined starting time in each case, to tap at the receiving end a sub-segment of the output signal with the length TPN which depends on the PN-sequence length and the symbol period, to correlate this sub-segment cyclically with a preprocessed PN sequence, thus producing a periodic function w(t), and to use a period of w(t) or a segment of w(t) either directly or following correction as an estimation function for the pulse response of the transmission path. <IMAGE>
