PURPOSE:To obtain the titled paint base hardenable in air even at normal temperature, having excellent dryability and water-resistance of the coating film and suitable for the interior coating of a building, by bonding a specific alcohol to a copolymer of an alpha,beta-unsaturated polybasic acid anhydride and a vinyl monomer by ring-opening esterification reaction. CONSTITUTION:The objective base is an aqueous solution or dispersion of an addition polymer having carboxyl groups and ester bonds on a number of said chains in a molecule and produced by reacting (A) a copolymer of (i) 1mol of an alpha,beta-unsaturated polybasic acid anhydride and (ii) 1-20mol of a vinyl monomer free from hydroxyl group (e.g. styrene) with (B) a monohydric alcohol containing allyl ether bond in the molecule and/or a drying oil fatty acid alkylene glycol monoester preferably at a ratio of 1:(0.3-1.5).
