PURPOSE:To obtain a colored powdery polymer free from free dye and by- produced inorganic salt, economically, by adding a basic dye to an aqueous solution of a copolymer composed of an ethylenic unsaturated sulfonic acid (salt) and a hydrophobic unsaturated monomer thereby dyeing the polymer. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of a copolymer composed of 5-70mol%, preferably 10-50mol% ethylenic unsaturated sulfonic acid or its salt (styrenesulfonic acid, vinylbenzylsulfonic acid, etc., and their salt) and a hydrophobic unsaturated monomer [e.g. alkyl (meth)acrylate, vinyl ester, styrene, etc.] and containing <=20wt%, preferably 0-10wt% alcohol is added with an aqueous solution of a basic dye (triphenylmethane dye, etc.). The mixture is adjusted to 2-7pH and heated at 40-80 deg.C. The obtained colored polymer is separated by filtration and dried to obtain the objective colored powdery polymer.
