<p>Human implantable collagen based materials having desirable properties with respect to antigenicity and possessing mechanical strength and flexibility are prepared by pretreating a collagen based material so that some of the amino acid side chains of the material are rendered unable to bind with a cross-linking agent. The pretreatment can be done with a reagent capable of reacting with or removing the primary amines of the amino acid side chains. The pretreated collagen based material is then reacted with a cross-linking agent to link at least some of the remaining amino acid side chains together.</p> |
