PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material of polymer, agricultural chemicals, etc., economically in high rate of reaction and high yield, using only a small amount of catalyst exhibiting excellent catalytic activity, by hydrogenating isoprene in the presence of a specific catalyst preliminarily treated with hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:Catalyst components composed of a cobalt compound, an organic phosphine compound and an aluminum compound are charged together with a solvent into a reactor and hydrogenated in the presence of hydrogen (under a hydrogen partial pressure of 20-40kg/cm<2> at a treatment temperature of -5-+10 deg.C) to obtain a catalyst having high catalytic activity. The objective compound is produced by the partial hydrogenation reaction of isoprene in the presence of the catalyst in a solvent such as toluene preferably at -5-+45 deg.C under normal pressure - 50kg/cm<2>. The partial hydrogenation of isoprene is carried out especially preferably at a cobalt concentration of <=5m-mol/kg, preferably <=3m-mol/kg in the reaction liquid. |
