Bobbin inserting apparatus for inserting a bobbin into the cradle mechanism of an operating station in a yarn handling machine of the type having a plurality of operating stations each including a yarn wind-up apparatus comprising a friction drive role and a cradle means for holding a bobbin tube/yarn package in contact with the friction drive roll during the formation of a yarn package on the bobbin tubes. Said bobbin inserting device comprises a bobbin gripper (30) movable along a predetermined path and a bobbin holder (116), (118) to present bobbins (22) to said gripper at a predetermined position on said path. The bobbin holder is adaptable to locate bobbins (22) of varying diameters relative to that path, and said gripper (30) is adaptable to collect bobbins of varying diameters from the holder (116), (118).
