PROCESS FOR PRODUCING BETA-LACTAM DERIVATIVES.

Beta-lactam derivs. of formula A-COOH (where A is a cephalosporin, penicillin or 3-exomethylenecepham residue or their sulphoxides or sulphones, or a 1-carbacephem or 1-oxacephem residue) are prepd. by reaction of a beta-lactam deriv. of formula A-COOX (where X is a benzyl gp. bearing an electron-donating gp. on the benzene ring, a diphenylmethyl gp. opt. bearing an electron-donating gp. on the benzene ring, or a tert-butyl gp.) with a phenol, the ratio by wt. of A-COOX to phenol being 1:0.5 to 1:500. The phenol may be phenol, o-chlorophenol, m-chlorophenol, p-chlorophenol, o-cresol, m-cresol, p-cresol or m-methoxyphenol.
