PURPOSE:To attain a high-speed operation and also to reduce greatly the KANJI (Chinese character) input load of an operator with a reference system for character strings, by securing the simple extraction of the KANJI string displayed on a screen with no second input. CONSTITUTION:A character string searching means 5 searches a KANJI string displayed on a screen display means 4 for the KANJI reading input given from a keyboard 1. Then it is checked whether or not the KANJI is equal to the KANJI group sent from a retrieving means 3. The KANJI string starting from the KANJI obtained from the means 5 is detected out of the screen by a character string extracting means 6. The character string group extracted by the means 6 is displayed on a screen by a display selecting means 7 together with the guidance for selecting one of plural character strings. Thus a desired KANJI string is selected.
