CONSTITUTION:The objective 4-carboxy-4-hydroxy-2-cyclopenten-1-one ester of formula II (R is alkyl) is produced by reacting 3-acetoxy-6- acetoxymethylpyran-2-one of formula I which can be easily produced from commercially available D-gluconolactone, etc., in a mixture of water and an alcohol or in an alcohol in the presence of an inorganic base such as NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3, etc. USE:An intermediate for the synthesis of pharmacologically active substance such as cyclopentanoid compound of prostaglandins, etc.
