1276531 Extraction of D-xylose NORCEM AS 11 June 1969 [11 June 1968] 29680/69 Heading C2C D-xylose is extracted from xylan-containing plant material by partially hydrolysing the plant material with acid, without decomposing the cellulose present, removing the cellulose, neutralizing and concentrating the hydrolysate and submitting the concentrated hydrolysate to a liquid-liquid counterflow extraction at a temperature of 20-110‹ C. with a polar organic solvent, or solvent mixture, miscible with water and having a dielectric constant in the pure solvent or solvent mixture of 10 to 27 at 20‹ C., the counterflow extraction, system having a water content of 4-28% by weight of the total weight of the system and xylose being crystallized after removal of solvent from the xylose containing extract. In a preferred method xylose is extracted from leaf wood, bagasse, corn, straw or alfalfa, hydrolysed with bisulphite, using as polar solvent isopropanol, n-propanol, isobutanol, n-butanol or acetone. After removal of the solvent the extract may be treated with Saccharomyces in order to remove hexoses present by fermentation.
|
