1278846 Explosive compositions; mixed crystals containing NH 4 NO 3 and K salts HIRTENBERGER PATRONEN-ZUNDHUTCHEN UND METALLWARENFABRIK AG 6 April 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 16257/70 Headings C1A and C1D A pulverulent or water-containing explosive mixture comprises by weight 0-20% water, 3-6% liquid hydrocarbon, and 50-97% mixed crystals isomorphous with ammonium nitrate III which have been prepared by co-crystallization between 20‹ and 100‹ C. of an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate and a potassium salt in the presence of a salt of a primary alkylamine having 8-18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. The potassium salt is preferably potassium nitrate but reference is also made to potassium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, formate, acetate, citrate, oxalate, and bichromate. The liquid hydrocarbon may be diesel oil. Perchlorate, nitrate or chloride salts of C 12 , C 10 , C 8 , or a mixture of C 5 -C 18 alkylamines may be used; formates, acetates and lactates are also referred to. The nitrate or acetate of ethanolamine may also be present. Additives to increase the solubility of the salts are the inorganic salts sodium and calcium nitrates and the organic compounds formamide, glycol, glycerine, dimethylformamide, acetamide, and urea. Other optional additives are barium and zinc nitrates, aluminium powder, guar flour or polyacrylamide, carbon, sugar, ethylhexylamine hydrochloride, silicone oil, and the high explosives nitroglycerine, TNT, PETN, and nitrated sugar and starch. The mixed crystals used in the compositions retain their lipophilic character at a lower temperature than the ammonium nitrate of Specification 1,205,244. |
