The invention relates to a process which can be used for cleaning stainless steel products using a cleaning bath whose initial composition is: HF, 10-50 g/l dissolved ferric iron (Fe3+)greater than or equal to 15 g/l water as required at a temperature of 15-70 degree C. According to the invention, the ferric iron content of the bath during the cleaning operation or operations is kept at at least 15 g/l by oxidizing the bath with one or more air jets whose total flow is greater than or equal to 1 Nm3 per m2 of cleaned stainless steel and per hour for each cleaned surface element. The process according to the invention is particularly well suited for the industrial cleaning of sheet and strips of stainless steel since it makes it possible to avoid the use of nitric acid and the pollution which is caused thereby.
