PURPOSE:To view a video at the time of fast winding and to speedily search a picture by providing a data head as well as a video rotating head and a control head, recording a video signal overlappingly and digitally after a control signal at the time of recording and reproducing it by the data head at the time of fast winding. CONSTITUTION:An input video signal is divided into two parts: one is recorded in the same way as a conventional method, in the other the video signal is first inputted to a synchronizing separator circuit 7 and the 1st signal processing circuit 8. Then one screen is stored, and immediately digitized and transmitted to a modulator circuit 9. The modulated signal is overlappingly recorded on a control track 17 by the data head 4 with a head gap angle different from a control head 3, after a control signal 19 is recorded. At the time of fast winding a tape, the tape is semi-loaded, traveled to a data head 4 in a state where the tape comes into contact with a magnetic tape 6, whereby the data head 4 can execute fast winding and fast reproducing.
