A copolymer of an alpha-olefin having the general formula RCH=CH2, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, the olefin content of said copolymer being at least 50 mole per cent, based on the copolymer and an alpha, beta ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, the acid monomer content of said polymer being from 0.2 to 25 mole per cent, based on the copolymer, said copolymer having at least 10% of the acid groups in the ionized form, -COO-, and containing uniformly distributed throughout the copolymer a diamine radical having the general formula <FORM:1029035/C3/1> where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R11 and R111 an hydrogen or an alkyl radical of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or alkylene radicals having from 1 to 10 carbon when R11 and R111 are combined, X is a carbon to carbon bond, oxygen, sulphur, an imine radical, carbonyl radical or phenylene radical, m is 0 to 4, and n is at least 1, said diamine radical being present in sufficient quantity to neutralize at least 10% of the acid groups, the diamine having a dissociation constant of at least 10-8. The base copolymer may be obtained by conventional methods or by grafting the acid comonomer to a polyolefin base, e.g. by reacting the base olefin with a peroxide or by exposing it to varying radiation and subsequently reacting with the acid monomer. |
