PREPARATION OF ORTHO-METHYL ANILINES FROM ORTHO-AMINO BENZYL SULFOXIDES

Prepn. of o-methylanilines(I) comprises reacting an oaminobenzyl sulphoxide(II) with a nonoxidising acid halide in inert solvent to produce a soln. of corresp. o-aminobenzyl halide(III) and S-cpd. by- prods. This soln. is treated with a basic tert. amine to form a quat. o-aminobenzyl ammonium halide salt(IV). The salt (IV) is pptd., leaving S-cpd. by-prods. in soln., and catalytically hydrogenated to form(I). (I) are useful in e.g. herbicide prodn.
