Clavulanic acid with its salts of formula (I) where R is H, Na or K, are prepd. by fermentation of Streptomyces jumonjinensis (NRLL 5741) or one of its mutant strains, e.g. LS 184, in a culture medium contg. sources of C, N, mineral salts and 0.05-0.5 g/l amino-sugars e.g. glucosamine, glucamine or galactosamine, at pH 6.5 and 28 deg.C. The alakli salt is opt. sepd. by ion exchange.
