PURPOSE:To obtain the titled high-purity compound useful as a sizing agent, resin improver, plasticizer, additive for lubricating oil, rust preventive, etc., in high yield, by reacting an alpha-olefin with maleic anhydride in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor such as a metallic salt of a dialkyldithiocarbamic acid, etc. CONSTITUTION:(A) An alpha-olefin (>=4C straight-chain olefin such as octadecene-1, etc.,) is reacted with (B) maleic anhydride in a feed ratio of preferably 1.1:1.0-1.8:1.0 in the presence of at least one polymerization inhibitor selected from a metallic salt of a dialkyldithiocarbamic acid (e.g., copper dimethyldithiocarbamate, etc.,) and a naphthol (e.g., alpha-naphthol, etc.,) at 200-250 deg.C to give the aimed succinic acid. The amount of the polymerization inhibitor used is preferably 10-10,000ppm.
