PURPOSE:To make it possible to continuously and automatically inspect the peripheral surface state of a nuclear fuel pellet, by passing the nuclear fuel pellet to be inspected through a large number of proximity sensors arranged in a ring shape from the axial direction of said pellet. CONSTITUTION:A pellet P to be inspected is moved to the direction shown by an arrow in a feed path formed by a guide body 1 and, as a moving means, a method for pushing the pellet from the rear or a method for sliding the pellet by inclining the feed path can be employed. In this case, the pellet P passes through the ring formed of a large number of proximity sensors 2 at the cut area A of the feed path. The proximity sensors 2 continuously detects the distance between the sensors 2 and the peripheral surface of the opposed pellet P, that is, the unevenness of the peripheral surface of the pellet P along the axial direction of said pellet P. A computer inputs the detection signals of respective proximity sensors 2 to calculate the shape of the peripheral surface in one cross-section of the pellet P crossing the axis thereof at a right angle and said shape is successively calculated along the axial direction of the pellet P. By this method, the presence and size of a breakage in the peripheral surface can be automatically inspected. |
