PURPOSE:To produce glassy silica gel having a high specific surface area at a low cost, by treating calcium silicate with a mineral acid, directly separating a liquid from solid, firing the supernatant water, washing the resultant gelatinous material with water and drying the washed material. CONSTITUTION:Calcium silicate is treated and reacted with a mineral acid, e.g. silicic acid, etc., and converted into a silica skeletal part left by extraction of calcium and an amorphous part decomposed and dispersed by cleaving silica chains. A liquid is directly separated from solid and the separated amorphous part is abed for about 10-20hr and gelatinized. The gelatinized material is then washed with water and dried to give the aimed silica gel. thereby, the silica gel capable of being a transparent beadlike drying agent is obtained.
