PURPOSE:To obtain a microscope which facilitates the observing work and has a very good operability, by providing a detecting part which detects the observing work state of an observation worker and switching the observation magnification to a high magnification after setting it to a low magnification automatically in accordance with the observing work state. CONSTITUTION:When the observation worker inputs information of operation start to an information input part 1, a control part 2 sends an operation instruction to a driving part 5 to set an observation magnification (low magnification) for non- observing work, and the driving part 5 operates a magnification converting mechanism part 6 and a magnification converting optical part 7. When the observation worker brings his eyes close to an eyepiece lens part and puts his hand on a stage part 10 for the purpose of performing the observing work, detection signals are sent to the control part 2 from an observation detecting part 4-1 and an observing work detecting part 4-2. The control part 2 receives detection signals to keep the observation magnification at allow magnification for a preliminarily set optional time as it is, and next, information which sets the observation magnification to a high magnification is sent to the control part 2, and the driving part 5 operates the magnification converting mechanism part 6 and the magnification converting optical part 7 by the operation instruction of the control part 2.
