PURPOSE:To hold an enzyme or coenzyme in a membrane with a high separation ratio and efficiently obtain xylitol by permeating only the xylitol through a membrane, by treating a specific reaction mixture containing the xylitol with a separation membrane having negative charge. CONSTITUTION:A separation membrane having >=3% salt holding ratio when treating an aqueous solution of NaCl in 0.5% concentration under condition of 25 deg.C and 10kg/cm<2> pressure and negative charge is obtained from a sulfonated polyarylene ether prepared by sulfonating a polyaryl ether consisting of repeating units expressed by the formula (R is CO or SO2), etc. An oxidation reduction enzyme and coenzyme in 0.01mM-1M concentration and a substrate, e.g. xylose, in <=10M concentration are previously introduced into a reaction vessel and a given enzymic reaction conjugate with regeneration reaction of the coenzyme is carried out in the presence of H2 as a reducing agent under <=100kg/cm<2> pressure at 0-80 deg.C. The reaction mixture containing the formed xylitol is treated with the above-mentioned separation membrane, as necessary, in the presence of an amphoteric buffer solution, e.g. glycylglycine buffer solution, to hold the enzyme and coenzyme in the membrane, permeate only the xylitol through the membrane and separate the xylitol. Thereby, the enzymic reaction is carried out.
