Dihydrobenzothiazine S-oxides. Cpds. (I), useful as hypnotics : (where one of X and Y is a bond and the other is CH2 and R is alkyl, alkenyl, propargyl, benzyl, carbethoxy, dialkylaminoalkyl, cycloaminoalkyl or -CH2COOR1 where R1 is H, alkyl, dialkylamino alkyl or cycloaminoalkyl; CH2CONR2R3, R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, alkenyl, dialkylaminoalkyl or cycloaminoalkyl or NR2R3 is a heterocyclic ring, or phenyl opt. substd. by halogen or sulphamoyl) esp. (I, X=CH2Y=bond, R=CH2CONMe2) are prepd. by ring formation, hydrolysis of a cyclic imino cpd. or introduction of R on to the unsubstituted N-atom, or modification of the group R.
