The subject of the invention relates to a device for the external insulation of walls, comprising rigid panels 1 made of insulating material which are placed side by side, fixed to the external surface of the wall and covered by a thick layer of hydraulic coating associated with reinforcing and fastening means on the external face of the panels. According to the invention, the insulating panels are made in such a way that they exhibit a global expansion which does not exceed approximately 500 microns per metre for a variation in temperature from - 20 DEG to + 70 DEG C, and the composition of the hydraulic coating is determined so that the latter is flexible and strong enough to undergo variations in dimension with respect to the insulating panel, of up to approximately 500 microns per metre, without cracks appearing over time. <IMAGE>
