PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight and flexible artificial leathery thin fabric for clothing rich in practical durability, by subjecting a nonwoven base fabric of specific basis weight consisting of ultrafine fiber-forming conjugate filaments to formation of high polymer elastic films, impregnation of a high polymer elastomer and formation of ultrafine fibers. CONSTITUTION:A web consisting of conjugate filaments forming ultrafine fibers of <=0.5 denier is subjected to high-pressure water stream treatment and needle punching to entangle the above-mentioned filaments and give an entangled nonwoven base fabric having <=150g/m<2> basis weight after forming ultrafine fibers, which is treated in (A) a step of partially applying a high polymer elastomer, e.g. polyurethane, preferably by a gravure coating method, etc., to form a film on the surface of the above-mentioned base fabric, (B) a step of permeating in a polyurethane resin solution and wet coagulating the polyurethane and (C) a step of forming ultrafine fibers in mutual combination. The resultant fabric is then subjected to a pressing step, buffed and then rubbed to afford the aimed flexible artificial leathery thin fabric having a high-class feeling. The above-mentioned steps (A), (B) and (C) may be carried out in an optional order.
