The method makes it possible to reinforce a cylindrical element 1 intended to withstand a torsional torque. A profiled part 2 is helically wound under tension around the cylindrical element 1, forming an even number of successive layers 3, 4 with this profiled part, and changing the direction F1, F2 of winding after each layer. The tension exerted on the profiled part 2 is calculated so that the windings made in the direction F1 exert a torsional torque on the cylindrical element 1 of equal torsion and of opposite direction to that exerted by the windings made in the other direction F2, each of these torques being at least equal to the maximum torque likely to be exerted on the cylindrical element 1 so that the winding in the opposite direction is never in compression and the cylindrical element is under zero torsion. Use especially for making a transmission shaft with a small torsion angle and reduced weight. <IMAGE>
