PURPOSE:To enable high brightness X ray output to be derived almost infactly, being unaffected by gas density, by constituting a shielding body, which encloses a space including ends of coaxial electrodes, with a metal mesh. CONSTITUTION:A discharge tube is provided with an anode of inner cylindrical electrode 1 and a cathode of outer cylindrical electrode 2 which are arranged coaxially. The top ends of the electrodes are enclosed by shielding body 7 which is made of a spherical metal mesh. The center of the spherical shielding body 7 is located at the axis of the inner cylindrical electrode 1, and the spherical shielding body 7 encloses a part of each of the coaxial electrodes and a space 8 where the plasma is pinched, and is kept at the same potential as that of the outer cylindrical electrode 2. The shielding boy 7 is provided with a window made of beryllium 9 aligned to the axis of the inner cylindrical electrode 1 with the rest made of mesh. This configuration can derive X ray out put of high brightness without reducing its intensity.
