PURPOSE:To evade splicing defects of fusion-splicing after setting of the gap between end faces of optical fiber strands by providing a clamp means and resolving the uneveness of front ends of optical fiber strands to set accurately the gap between end faces. CONSTITUTION:In case that end faces of optical fiber strands a1-a5 and b1-b5 are butted against both faces of a butting plate 9, optical fiber strands a1-a5 and b1-b5 are moved in prescribed directions until end faces of optical fiber strands a3 and b5 having the shortest exposed length come into butting against the butting plate 9. Though end faces of optical fiber strands a1-a5 and b1-b5 are arranged on lines with the butting plate 9 between them and gaps between end faces of pairs of optical fiber strands a1 and b1-a5 and b5 are uniform by this butting optical fiber strands a1, a2, a4, a5, b1, b2, b3, and b4 other than optical fiber strands a3 and b5 having the shortest exposed length are bent. At this time, the clamping force of strand clamps 7a and 7b are increased to hold optical fiber strands a1-a5 and b1-b5 in recessed grooves 4a, 4a..., 4b, 4b... so that they are not slipped, and bends are held between coating clamps 6a and 6b and strand clamps 7a and 7b. |
