PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent copy of even an original where a halftone image and a binary image are both present and to facilitate the erasure of an optional area on the original by discriminating between the halftone image and binary images in each area on the original and switching both automatically. CONSTITUTION:A signal to be outputted to a recording means is switched among a signal after halftone processing, a simply binary-coded signal, and a specific-level signal according to the decision result of an area deciding means 70 and a specified operation mode. When the specific-level signal is selected, respective picture elements of a recording image area recording picture elements or nonrecording picture elements irrelevantly to the original image. Therefore, when the area deciding means decides a half-tone area, the signal after halftone processing is selected and when the means decides a binary area, the simply binary-coded signal is selected, thus obtaining an excellent copy. Halftone areas on the original are erased in an operation mode where the specific-level signal is selected when a halftone area is decided, and characters are erased in an operation mode where the specific-level signal is selected when a binary area is decided.
