PURPOSE:To enable direct calling and to inform calling subscribers except a specific calling subscriber that a called subscriber is absent by letting only the specific calling subscriber know a specific word which enables calling. CONSTITUTION:When a termination signal is received, a control circuit 5 starts a sound recording/reproducing circuit 9 and an answer message which urges the sound recording of a message is sent out the calling subscriber from a tape part 10 through a transmitting AMP 3. The calling subscriber confirms the answer message and then sends out the specific word which requests the calling of the called subscriber. When the specific word recognizing circuit 6 of an automatic answering telephone device detects the specific word through a receiving AMP 4, a calling state display signal generating circuit 8 is driven and its audible tone is sent out to the calling subscriber through the transmitting AMP 3. When said specific word is not detected during termination, the message is recorded as usual.
